From Ambition to Action

Recapping the SGI Forum 2022

The SGI Forum 2022, held in tandem with COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, reconvened allies from across the climate ecosystem under the theme ‘from ambition to action’. Speakers highlighted the steps taken over the previous year towards achieving Saudi Arabia’s ambitious national targets as well as laying out the roadmap for the coming years.

Huge investment in renewable energy

13 new renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 11.4GW, at an estimated investment value of US$ 9 billion (SAR 34 billion), are under development with plans for 10 more projects to be finalized in 2023.

Scaled up afforestation commitments

The Kingdom will plant over 600 million trees by 2030, an increase of more than 150 million trees from the initial goal of 450 million by 2030.

Accelerated pace of land and sea protection

The Kingdom will achieve the SGI target of placing 30% of its land and sea under protection by 2030, ahead of the original timeline announced in 2021.

New environment-focused initiatives

17 new initiatives launched across the country to restore natural greenery and protect against the impacts of climate change

Greenhouse gas crediting and offsetting scheme announced

To be launched in 2023, this will support and incentivize efforts and investments in emission reduction and removal projects in all sectors in the Kingdom.

The world’s largest planned CCS hub unveiled

The Ministry of Energy announced a Joint Development Agreement with Saudi Aramco and its partners for a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) hub in Jubail Industrial City.

Project launches and MoU signings

The SGI Forum 2022 witnessed the launch of two pilot projects for carbon capture and utilization, as well as multiple MoUs that will strengthen the Kingdom’s capacity to produce clean hydrogen.

Immersing visitors in Saudi’s green transition

The SGI Gallery was an immersive space that showcased the action, innovation and investment within Saudi Arabia's green transition. Visitors to the gallery were able to discover the multitude of climate action initiatives in progress across Saudi Arabia.

What is the Middle East Green Initiative Summit?

The MGI Summit is a first-of-its-kind regional dialogue on climate, bringing together leaders on an annual basis to continue scaling up regional climate action through collaboration.

The first MGI Summit was hosted by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince in Riyadh on October 25, 2021. This event saw leaders from the MENA region and beyond agreeing to work together to tackle climate change.

In November 2022, the MGI Summit convened leaders in Sharm El Sheikh. The second edition of the summit was held in tandem with COP27, ensuring that the climate solutions needed in the region continued to be considered on a global scale.

What is the SGI Forum?

Will Saudi Arabia be leading any other climate-focused events?

During the SGI Forum 2022 Saudi Arabia announced it is working with UNFCCC to host MENA Climate Week in 2023. Taking place in the lead up to COP28, this event will bring together regional and global stakeholders to explore challenge and opportunities, showcase innovation and solutions, and advance climate action.
